The world becomes awfully quiet without free speech. More and more voices are being silenced by legislation, self-censorship and intimidation.

About the campaign
Freedom of speech is increasingly under threat in the world today. More and more voices are being silenced by legislation, self-censorship and intimidation. In many places, democracy and the rule of law are being undermined and human rights violated. These developments call for increased efforts to promote freedom of expression, transparency and media freedom.
Free speech and transparency were guaranteed in Sweden 250 years ago when the Swedish Parliament passed the Freedom of the Press Act.
This was the first legislation of its kind anywhere in the world. The Act has served Sweden well. Free speech and transparency are fundamentals not only for democracy, but also for innovation and combating corruption. This film was created in recognition of this anniversary and to promote freedom of expression around the world.
